Ura Valley Bhutan

Ura Valley Bhutan is located in central Bhutan. It is under the Bumthang district. it is at an elevation of 3100 meters above sea level.  If you want to travel from Bumthang town it is a 48km car drive. it takes one hour and thirty minutes. You have to take the old route to reach the valley. While driving to Ura to Ura don’t miss visiting Membartsho or Burning Lake.

Ura Valley in Bhutan is a beautiful terraced field with alpine vegetation connecting to Eastern Bhutan. Ura village with Bhutanese architecture looks to be a medieval setup structure.

The Ura village was named after Guru Padmasambhava. He brought Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century. He is said to have passed Ura Valley on his first trip to Bhutan. Before it was called “Urbay”.  When he turns up second visit village celebrates the Yakchoe festival of Ura Valley as an annual festival.

Most tourists traveling into Bhutan will find Ura Valley as the real model village with small traditionally built houses of about 50. The footpath is built with flat stones with a proper drainage system, which will take back to the olden days. It is still a virgin without modernization without influencing the modern type of Bhutanese construction in western Bhutan.

The people of Valley depend on agriculture and rear sheep and yak. Ladies of Ura still maintain the tradition of covering their heads with a white scarf against the cold wind. They also wear sheepskin behind their back which helps them to carry loads of things with a cushion on the back. You can see in the middle of the village a monastery, where a Festival is held every year.

Every season of Bhutan has its beauty to visit the Ura  Valley Bhutan. We consider a visit to the Festival would be the best time to visit the valley. May and August are festive months to visit the Valley. Being the highest valley of Bumthang region winters are extremely cold and if you are not comfortable with extreme cold it is not advisable to visit Ura.

Matsutake Festival

The hilly region of Ura Valley Bhutan is known for producing the best matsutake mushrooms. The matsutake festival is held in Ura annually. It is held during August where stalls are put up to serve mushrooms in unique styles and recipes. During the festival earn to identify and harvest the wild Matsutake mushrooms. Most Japanese tourists love to come and get the taste of organic wild mushrooms.

This fungi is common in the forest of Ura valley of Bhutan. Tourism Council of Bhutan with the local community will also showcase other local products, mushroom hunting, and cultural programs by the school and people of Ura. The objective of the festival is to create awareness among travelers to know how to harvest the local mushroom and enjoy the taste.

Hike to the valley trails will also provide you with the real village of Bhutan with Bhutanese architecture and the region’s exquisite temples and monasteries.
