Brief on District

Punakha lies in western Bhutan with an elevation of 1300 meters. It has to pass the Thimphu district traveling towards the central and eastern districts of Bhutan. Punakha is one of the 20 districts of Bhutan. Punakha district is bordered between three districts i.e. Gasa, Wangdiphodrang, and Thimphu. Till 1955, Punakha served as the winter capital of Bhutan. Currently, it serves as the winter residence for the Central Monastic Body. Punakha district is divided into eleven gewogs, namely Baarp, Chhubu, Dzomi, Goenshari, Guma, Kabjisa, Lingmukha, Shengana, Talo, Toepisa and Toedwang.

The historical significance of Punakha Valley

Punakha Places to visit start with the historic significance of Punakha Dzong. Punakha served as the capital of the country from 1637 to 1907. The first national assembly was hosted here in 1953 during the kingship of third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. Punakha Dzong is not only the second oldest and second-largest dzong but it also has one of the most majestic structures built at a strategic location between two rivers.

Therefore remarkable event was held in Punakha at Punakha Dzong. On 13th October 2011, an unforgettable wedding of 5th King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to Jetsun Pema was taken place here.  In addition to its structural beauty, Punakha Dzong is notable for containing the preserved remains of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of Bhutan as well as a sacred relic known as the “Ranjung Karsapani“. This relic is a self-created image of Avalokiteswara that miraculously emerged from the vertebrae of Tsangpa Gyarey, the founder of the Drukpa School when he was cremated.

Geographical

Punakha valley has a pleasant climate with warm winters and hot summers. It is located at an average elevation of 1200 m above sea level. Owing to the favourable climatic conditions, rice has become the main cash crop cultivated in the region.

The district is also well known as a tourist destination in Bhutan. Punakha places to visit will be interesting & awesome. Punakha Dzong is a major attraction besides Talo Dzong, Chhimi Lhakhang, Khamsum Yulley Namgyel Chorten, Suspension bridge, and the two hot springs.
