Bumthang Valley

Bumthang Valley is one of the 20th districts of Bhutan. It is famous for the oldest temples and sacred sites located in the Bumthang Valley. It consists of the four mountain valleys of Ura, Chumey, Tang, and Choekhor. Choekhor is the largest is considered as ‘Bumthang Valley’. All valleys are broad and suitable for agriculture activities. The wide and glacial scenic valleys provide a large number of tourists attractions every year. It is considered as Switzerland in the east.

Bumthang literally means  “beautiful field”. “Thang” means field or flat land. “Bum” is also derived from the Buddhist word” Bumpa” a vessel for the holy water container. It describes the shape and nature of the valley.

Bumthang valley is famous for buckwheat, honey, potato, dairy products,  apples, rice, woolen products. Bumthang is also nationally famous for “Yatha” and Bumthang matha weaving. Bumthang is famous for the oldest monasteries, which came into existence after Guru Rimpoche’s visit to Bumthang.

Bumthang Valley consists of many monasteries and monuments. Kurjey Lhakhang is the oldest Lhakhang in Bhutan. Jambay Lhakhang is famous for naked dance performed by Buddhist monks. It got a history of its own. Kenchoksum Lhakhang has located on another side of the main river of the valley.

If you have time in Bumthang you can visit Ura Valley. Day excursion to the valley will be best if you dont want to stay in Ura Valley

Maximum Bhutan Festivals are held in the Bumthang district since Guru Rimpoche came to Bumthang.
