Trongsa Bhutan

The name Trongsa Bhutan was originated from Yongzin Ngagi Wangchuk. The guardian deity, Palden Lhamo directed to go to a place in central Bhutan. He arrived in 1541. While he was meditating he saw a flicker of light like a butter lamp burning in the open air.

The place was where the fortress is located now. In 1543 a small meditation quarter was set up there. The cluster of meditation quarters was set up there and the people named “Trongsa” which literally means “new village”.

In 1647 Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal directed Chhoeje Minjur Tenpa the first Penlop to construct the Trongsa Dzong. During the 17th century, Desi Tenzin Rabgay expanded the fortress. Presently there are 26 temples and 450 monks residing inside the fortress. The fortress had been the headquarter for the eastern region. It was and presently is the seat for Trongsa Penlop.

The other sacred spots of the place are Ta-Dzong that is located above the main town while proceeding to Bumthang valley. Now the Ta-Dzong is converted into Museum. Another beautiful place would be day excurssion to Kuenga Rabten Palace. Ta-Museum in Trongsa is another reviving museum in Bhutan.

Trongsa Bhutan is located in the central part of Bhutan. The size of the district is about 1807 km². With an elevation ranging from 800 meters to 4,800 meters. The size of the population is 15,562 as of July 2012. It shares the boundaries with .i.e Bumthang, Wangdiphodrang, and Zhemgang.

It consists of five sub-districts namely Drakteng, Korphu, Nubi, Langthil, Tangsibji, and Nubi. Agriculture farming is the main source of income.

Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park is located here covering an area of 1723 km². It is the habitat for one of the most globally endangered species, Golden Langur. The Mangduechhu River plays a vital for white river rafting in Bhutan. The Mangdechhu Hydroelectric project, which generates 720 MW.
