Hotels in Bhutan came into existence when Tourism was opened in 1974 and the Fourth King of Bhutan was crowned in the year 1974. In 1974 a total of 287 tourists visited Bhutan. In Number 2019 the figure reached 9189. The figure is excluding regional tourists (from India, Bangladesh, and Maldives).

Bhutan Hotels was introduced by the Royal Government of Bhutan in three locations Phuentsholing, Paro, and Thimphu to cater hospitality Industry in Bhutan. Small hotels started mushrooming because of the flow of tourists. In 1991 the Bhutan Tourism Corporation (BTC) started the government’s tourism Industry framing the structure of Tourism in Bhutan.

Later on, the Royal Government of Bhutan privatized Tourism in October 1991 with the government as a monitoring body on the top. This policy provided private-sector development and decentralizing the Tourism Industry in Bhutan.  All tourists traveling need to undergo (group or individual) an advanced pre-planned program, prepaid, guided tour package.

The First private-owned Tourist hotels were Druk Hotels in Phuentsholing and Thimphu and Olathang Hotel in Paro. After the 1990’s many tourist hotels came out in different places in Bhutan.

The western part of Bhutan like Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Wangdi, and Phubjikha plays a vital role in the Bhutan Tourism industry. Joint ventures with multinational companies were framed up and the establishment of a luxury hotel in Bhutan. Como Hotels and Resorts and Tashi Group of companies jointly set up Como Uma.

Latter on Taj Hotels with the Tashi Group of companies jointly came out with Taj-Tashi in Thimphu. Amon Resorts were established in five locations in Bhutan starting from Paro to the central part of Bhutan Bumthang. Thailand company Dusit Group established a joint venture with Yarkay Group as Dusit Yarkay in Thimphu.
